RESULTS AND DISCUSSION:
Effective weed control is important to profitable peanut production, but questions still remain as to the potential injury from soil applied and postemergence herbicides. In this study, Prowl at 0.75, 1.0, and 1.25 lb/A was applied preplant incorporated (PPI) and preemergence (PRE), Outlook was applied PRE and postemergence - topical (PT) at 0.75 and 1.0 lb/A, and Dual Magnum rates was applied PRE and PT at 0.75 and 1.0 lb/A. PPI applications were made to flat ground, incorporated 3 times with a springtooth harrow, and listed. Preemergence applications were made immediately after planting and postemergence - topical applications were made to 1-2" peanuts. Peanut injury, canopy height and width were recorded throughout the season and yield was determined.
Prowl PPI and PRE, Outlook PRE and PT, and Dual Magnum PRE and PT did not cause visual peanut injury throughout the growing season (Table 1). No treatment reduced peanut canopy height or canopy width (data not shown). Peanut yield ranged from 3030 to 3600 lb/A, but no herbicide treatment reduced yield relative to the untreated control. Prowl has been shown to have good activity on carelessweed and Outlook and Dual Magnum have good activity on yellow nutsedge. These results indicate that Prowl, Outlook and Dual Magnum can be used safely in peanut to control troublesome weeds.
