RESULTS AND DISCUSSION:

Prowl is a dinitroaniline herbicide registered for use in peanut and cotton. Prowl controls annual grass and small-seeded broadleaf weeds such as tumble weed and carelessweed. Previous research indicated good peanut tolerance to Prowl when applied PPI, but little information is available when Prowl is applied preemergence. This study was established to evaluate peanut tolerance to Prowl applied PPI and PRE, Valor applied alone and in combination with Prowl PRE, and Pursuit applied PRE (not currently labeled PRE).

Prowl at 0.75, 1.0, and 1.25 lb ai/A applied PPI or PRE did not injure peanut throughout the growing season (Table 1). Valor at 0.063 lb/A applied alone or in combination with Prowl PRE also did not injure peanut season long. Pursuit at 0.063 (1X) and 0.032 (0.5X) injured peanut 48 to 75% on May 23, 35 to 62% on June 8, and 16 to 40% on July 26.

The only plot that yielded less than the weed-free check plot received a full rate of Pursuit PRE. Previous research has shown that this rate of Pursuit applied POST did not cause a yield reduction. This research indicates that Prowl PPI or PRE may be used in peanut without a loss in peanut yield.
